Curriculum
Language Arts
Reading - I am committed to helping every student establish the habits of a reader and a lifelong love of books. Children read in order to become smarter about the world and how it works. They read to broaden their vocabularies and to become better readers. In fifth grade, our focus in reading is for deeper understanding and making connections while we read. This will be accomplished through independent reading time as well as literature discussion groups based on novels students read. Students are required to read a minimum of 3 books a month. The great reading goal is 40 books for the school year!
Spelling - Each Monday students will receive a weekly spelling pre-test focusing on a specific skill. This will determine whether they will be given the regular list or an extension list for that week. Various
activities will be assigned throughout the week with a final spelling test given
on Friday.
Writing - We will be calling ourselves authors this year. Author’s need to be able to analyze reading and writing to effectively reach the intended audience! A big portion of our writing curriculum focuses on personal narratives and getting to the heart of the story. In addition to narratives, students will also focus on informational pieces.
Math
**Mrs. Hildebrand and I will be switching classes this year. I will teach math to both her class and mine, while she will teach both science and social studies to both classes. The reason for our team approach is
to focus on each of our areas of expertise to better instruct and meet the educational needs of your child. Some units will require your child to work harder than others due to individual knowledge. Every child will be an expert at some point in the year.
Social Studies
Our social studies units are very engaging with many hands-on activities. We begin the year in social studies reviewing various map skills. From there we progress to studying about Native Americans, Exploration, Settlement of North America, Thirteen Colonies, American Revolution, and the formation of the United States Government.
Science
We will be using a hands-on approach along with inquiry to engage your child in many wonderful science experiences. The three units of study are Objects in the Sky, Force and Motion, and Systems and Survival.
